Coastal Island Favorites: Happy Hour Spots with a View

We work hard, so we play hard – and we love a good sunset! With the first day of Fall finally here, the air is cooler, the humidity is down, and it’s the perfect season to enjoy happy hour outside. Whether you’re looking for marsh views, riverfront cocktails, or a rooftop overlooking the ocean, the Lowcountry has no shortage of places to relax with a drink and a view. Here are some of our favorite spots across Charleston and the surrounding islands.

James Island

Bowen’s Island Restaurant is a true Charleston landmark. Perched above the marsh with panoramic views of the Folly River, it’s the perfect place to enjoy oysters, cold beer, and a sunset that never disappoints. Rustic, authentic, and unmistakably Lowcountry.

Johns Island

Head to The Dunlin at Kiawah River, where you’ll find elevated cocktails, seasonal bites, and gorgeous views of the river and marshland. It’s one of Johns Island’s newer hot spots and a beautiful way to experience the island’s natural scenery.

West Ashley

For a classic Charleston happy hour with water views, California Dreaming is a staple. Located on the Ashley River, it’s known for its floor-to-ceiling windows and riverfront patio, perfect for watching the sky turn shades of orange and pink as the sun sets. Get the salad and thank us later!

Downtown Charleston

If you’re in the heart of the city, nothing beats a rooftop view. The Rooftop at The Vendue is a longtime favorite, offering panoramic views of the harbor and steeple-filled skyline alongside fun cocktails. For a more elevated experience, check out The Citrus Club at The Dewberry, the highest rooftop in town, where you can sip a drink while watching the sunset paint the city in golden light.

North Charleston

MOMO offers modern cocktails and sushi with stunning views of the Cooper River. The sleek design pairs perfectly with the riverfront backdrop, making it a great place to unwind on a crisp fall evening.

Mt. Pleasant

When it comes to waterfront dining, you can’t go wrong with Shem Creek. Tavern & Table is a favorite, serving craft cocktails and Lowcountry classics while boats drift by and dolphins surface nearby. Honestly, anywhere along Shem Creek promises a beautiful view and a memorable happy hour experience.

Folly Beach

If you want to sip a drink with your toes practically in the sand, head to Pinky’s Beachside Grill, one of the few spots actually on the beach. For a different perspective, check out the rooftop at Catch 23, where you can take in sweeping views of the entire island.

Sullivan’s Island

The Obstinate Daughter is an island classic, known for its creative menu and stylish coastal atmosphere. While the food and cocktails are reason enough to visit, the charm of Sullivan’s makes it the perfect backdrop for a leisurely happy hour.

Isle of Palms

On IOP, Islander 71 Fish House & Deck Bar delivers some of the best sunset views around. Overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, it’s the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood and a cocktail while the sun dips below the horizon.

Kiawah Island

For a truly unforgettable setting, The Ryder Cup Bar at the Ocean Course Clubhouse is open to the public and offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the famed golf course. Pair the scenery with a classic cocktail, and you’ve got one of the most picturesque happy hours in the Lowcountry.

With cooler evenings and golden skies, Fall is the season to take full advantage of Charleston’s best happy hour views. Whether you’re creekside, oceanfront, or riverside, there’s no better backdrop for raising a glass. Cheers!
