Remembering 9/11: Honoring the Day of Service

Each year on September 11, we pause to remember the lives lost and salute the heroes who rose in the face of tragedy. What once was a day of grief has transformed into a national Day of Service—a chance to give back, connect with our community, and keep the promise to never forget.

In Charleston, 2025 brings several beautiful opportunities to reflect, serve, and renew our spirit:

  • Thursday, September 11 – Memorial Stair Climb
At 7:30 AM, join the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston at the Charleston RiverDogs stadium for a stair climb honoring the 412 first responders who sacrificed their lives. Stair by stair, this solemn act becomes a powerful symbol of remembrance.
  • Saturday, September 13 – 9/11 Heroes Run, Daniel Island
At 9:00 AM, the Travis Manion Foundation hosts a 5K run, walk, or ruck on Daniel Island. Ruckers can embrace the challenge and receive a special GORUCK patch, while runners and walkers honor our heroes in stride.
  • Wednesday, September 11 – Habitat for Humanity Day of Service
Volunteer from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM with Charleston Habitat for Humanity. The day begins with an opening ceremony at 8:30 AM and ends with a communal reflection at 3:00 PM, offering hands-on service combined with heartfelt tribute.
  • Saturday, September 13 – Memorial Motorcycle Ride
Kickstands go up at 11:00 AM from Lowcountry Harley-Davidson. Join this ride featuring camaraderie, sustenance, and tribute—with breakfast, lunch, raffles, speakers, and more to elevate the spirit of unity.

These events are more than ceremonies—they’re moments of collective strength and healing. Whether you’re climbing stairs, hitting the pavement, swinging a hammer, or riding through remembrance, your presence matters.

How you can participate:

  1. Find your fit—run, walk, ruck, volunteer, ride.
  2. Register ahead—many events are free, others may include an official T-shirt or patch.
  3. Bring someone—sharing the experience amplifies the impact.
  4. Reflect afterward—take a moment to remember and share your experience or good deed with others, helping spread the spirit of service.

On this Day of Service and throughout the year, let’s honor those we’ve lost by healing together, serving together, and never forgetting.
