Some days in real estate are spent touring homes, negotiating contracts, and handing over keys. Other days look a little different.

Last month, our team had the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity on a home rebuild in West Ashley. The home had been taken down to the studs, and we spent the day helping bring it back to life—swinging hammers, installing materials, learning new skills, and yes… discovering muscles we didn’t know we had.

Charleston in the summer doesn’t exactly make construction work easy, but every drop of sweat was worth it knowing we were helping create a place a local family will soon call home.

Why Habitat for Humanity Matters

Habitat for Humanity believes everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. Rather than giving homes away, the organization partners with hardworking families who invest their own time through “sweat equity” while purchasing their homes with affordable mortgages.

That model doesn’t just build houses—it helps build stability, stronger neighborhoods, and brighter futures for families throughout our community.

As a real estate team, we spend every day helping people buy and sell homes. Getting the opportunity to help build one was a powerful reminder that homeownership changes lives in more ways than one.

Want to Get Involved?

One of the best things about Habitat is that you don’t have to be a contractor or have construction experience to volunteer. We certainly aren’t!

Volunteers help with everything from framing and painting to landscaping, organizing materials, and supporting special events. You’ll receive guidance on-site, and you’ll leave with a few new skills, some sore muscles, and the satisfaction of knowing you made a real difference.

There are plenty of ways to support Habitat beyond swinging a hammer, too. You can donate, shop or donate building materials through the ReStore, volunteer individually or as a team, or simply help spread awareness of the organization’s mission.

Whether you have a few hours to spare or are looking for a way to give back as a group, Habitat for Humanity offers a meaningful opportunity to invest in your community.

We’re grateful to have been part of this project and look forward to volunteering again. Until then, we’ll happily return to our day jobs—but we won’t complain quite as much the next time we’re carrying lockboxes instead of lumber.
