Celebrate 250 Years of Carolina Day in Charleston

This year, Charleston is preparing for a historic milestone: the 250th anniversary of Carolina Day.

Observed annually on June 28, Carolina Day commemorates the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in 1776, when a small force of South Carolina defenders successfully repelled a powerful British naval attack. The victory protected Charleston, boosted morale throughout the colonies, and helped establish the iconic palmetto tree as a symbol of South Carolina. In fact, the soft palmetto logs used to build the fort absorbed British cannon fire, helping secure the American victory and earning the palmetto its place on our state flag.

While many Americans are familiar with events like the Boston Tea Party or the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Battle of Sullivan’s Island was one of the earliest and most significant victories of the Revolutionary War. For South Carolinians, it’s a source of pride that continues to be celebrated nearly 250 years later.

To mark this year’s anniversary, SC250 has organized a series of special events throughout the Charleston area. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, looking for a family-friendly outing, or simply want to take part in a once-in-a-generation celebration, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.
