Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than TWO years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Today, it serves as a time to reflect on our nation’s history, honor the resilience and achievements of African Americans, and celebrate the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality.
While the events of Juneteenth originated in Texas, the holiday carries particular significance in Charleston and throughout the Lowcountry.
Charleston played a central role in the history of slavery in America. For generations, enslaved Africans were brought through Charleston’s port, and their labor, culture, and contributions helped shape the city and region we know today. The stories of those individuals—and the generations that followed—remain a huge part of Charleston’s identity.
Today, Juneteenth offers an opportunity to learn more about that history while celebrating the culture, traditions, and communities that continue to enrich the Lowcountry.
This weekend, local organizations will host a variety of events that honor the spirit of Juneteenth through education, food, music, storytelling, and community gathering. Highlights include:
- J.O.Y. (Juneteenth On The Yard) – A community celebration focused on culture, connection, and fellowship.
- Jubilee Juice: The Red Drink at McLeod Plantation – An exploration of the traditions and symbolism behind the iconic red beverages often associated with Juneteenth celebrations.
- Juneteenth Cooking Class & Dinner Celebration – A chance to experience the history and significance of traditional foods connected to the holiday.
- Living Legacies: A Juneteenth Commemoration – A program focused on preserving stories, honoring ancestors, and reflecting on the meaning of freedom.
- Juneteenth Family Fest Charleston – A family-friendly celebration featuring entertainment, activities, food, and community engagement.
Whether you’re attending an educational program, supporting local organizations, exploring Charleston’s rich history, or simply taking time to reflect on the significance of the day, Juneteenth provides an opportunity for all of us to learn, remember, and come together as a community.
We encourage everyone to explore the events happening throughout the Lowcountry and take part in honoring this important chapter of American history.
