October in the Lowcountry: Historic Homes, Live Music & a Few Good Scares

October in the Lowcountry means pumpkins on the porch, a calendar full of plans, and dressing for fall even if the weather hasn’t quite caught up. From a Charleston tradition celebrating 50 years to live music, community celebrations, and a night in the swamp, here are six events we’re making room for this month.

The Fall Tours: 50 Years of Looking Beyond the Front Door

October 1–31 | Charleston and surrounding neighborhoods

Ever walked past a Charleston home and wondered what’s behind the garden gate? The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Fall Tours offer a chance to take a closer look. Now in their 50th year, the tours celebrate the architecture, history, and people that give this area its character.

Throughout October, choose from guided walks, house and garden tours, and more intimate architecture and history experiences. Many participating properties are private homes and gardens, making this an opportunity to explore places you wouldn’t ordinarily get to visit. Each tour offers something different, so check the description when booking: walking tours explore from the street, while select house and garden tours and Insider’s Tours offer access beyond it.

This year’s “Well Preserved for 50 Years” walking tour on October 15 adds a fitting anniversary perspective. It explores the Preservation Society’s grassroots beginnings and the people whose work helped protect Charleston’s historic streets and buildings. It’s a reminder that the city we love today reflects generations of people choosing to care for it.

For those of us who spend plenty of time admiring local homes, this one is especially easy to love. Whether you’ve lived here for decades or are still learning your way around, there’s something satisfying about seeing a familiar neighborhood with fresh eyes. Book ahead; tour sizes are limited.

Riverfront Revival: Your Weekend Soundtrack

October 9–10 | Riverfront Park, North Charleston

Two days of live music by the river? We can make room for that. Curated by Darius Rucker, Riverfront Revival returns with a lineup that includes Rucker, Old Dominion, Gavin Adcock, Nelly, and more.

Gather your concert crew, browse the lineup, and plan a weekend around good music and local food. It’s a pretty convincing reason to leave the usual Friday-night plans behind.

Charleston Pride Parade: A Colorful Start to Saturday

October 17 | 9–11 a.m. | King Street, Downtown Charleston

Start Saturday with a celebration of Charleston’s LGBTQIA+ community. The Charleston Pride Parade brings people together downtown for a morning of colorful floats, cheering crowds, and community pride.

The parade begins at Wragg Square at 9 a.m. before turning onto King Street at Ann Street. It’s free to attend and takes place rain or shine. Grab a coffee, find a spot along the route, and bring your best cheering voice.

Toss for Tatas: Throw Discs, Do Good

October 24 | Park Circle

Of course, this one has a special place on our calendar! Our second annual Toss for Tatas is back for a day of disc golf, Halloween fun, and giving back in support of Throw Pink.

Round up a four-person team, plan your costumes, and join us at Park Circle. Coming to cheer everyone on? There’s fun off the course, too, with a silent auction and raffle.

We’d love to see familiar faces and welcome some new ones. Use the link below or reach out to us directly for team registration, sponsorship opportunities, or to contribute a raffle or silent auction item.

Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch: For the Little Monsters

Fridays–Sundays through November 1 | Mount Pleasant

Some fall plans are worth repeating. Boone Hall’s Pumpkin Patch brings together a corn maze, a family-friendly Halloween tractor tour, a petting zoo, pig races, and pumpkins ready for their front-porch debut.

Make an afternoon of it with the kids, take the fall photos, and let everyone help choose a pumpkin—even if “helping” means finding the biggest one you can carry.

A helpful detail before heading out: the pumpkin patch entrance is at 2434 North Highway 17, separate from the plantation’s main entrance on Long Point Road.

Halloween in the Swamp: For the Older Ghouls

October 15–16 and October 23–24 | Cypress Gardens, Moncks Corner

If your ideal Halloween outing includes a proper scare, put Halloween in the Swamp on your list. Cypress Gardens after dark sets the scene, and Sara can confirm from personal experience: this one is actually scary—and so much fun.

Her biggest tip? Tickets sell out FAST. Sales open October 1, so set a reminder and coordinate with your group ahead of time. This is one you’ll want to book early.
